A number of future autism service dogs, also known as “Superhero Dogs,” are in need of loving, temporary homes — and BluePath is looking for Dutchess County volunteers to help.

BluePath’s service dogs provide more opportunities and independence for children and families affected by autism. Volunteers are needed for six to 12 months during each dog’s BluePath Formal Training Program. No previous experience is necessary — just a fierce devotion to dogs and a drive to make a difference in the world.

“Volunteer fosters represent a crucial component of BluePath’s training program,” said BluePath's Director of Marketing and Development, Erica Stanzione. “The care and love they provide make it possible for our service dogs to profoundly change people’s lives.”

Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the United States, and according to the Autism Society, more than 3.5 million individuals live with an autism spectrum disorder. A service dog can reduce stress, improve sleeping routines, boost social interactions, and provide families with a brand new sense of empowerment.

“Fostering for BluePath has been an amazing experience for our entire family. Our second dog, Sonny, recently graduated as a service dog," said Jean Marie Trick of Fishkill. "We were so proud of his accomplishment, but of course, that meant we would have to say goodbye. Meeting his new family and hearing their story tempered any sadness my girls felt about giving him up. This is where he is meant to be and we were fortunate to play a small role in helping him get there.”
