Man Being Pursued By Police In VA Dies After Shooting Himself In Rideshare Vehicle: PD

A death investigation has been launched in Arlington after a man in his 20s fleeing from police shot himself in the back of a rideshare vehicle, police say.

Shortly after 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, the Arlington Police Department were advised of a Virginia State Police pursuit after a suspect made his way to the Clarendon neighborhood and fled his vehicle on foot.

Officers patrolling the area later spotted the suspect getting into the backseat of a rideshare, which was stopped by police at the intersection of 10th Street North and North Edgewood Street, at which point a weapon was discharged, resulting in a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Emergency medical assistance was provided, and the man was rushed to an area hospital, where he later died from the gunshot wound, the department announced on Thursday, March 23. The driver of the vehicle was uninjured.

The body has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to identify him, as well as to determine the exact cause and manner of death, officials said.
