The 11-year-old texted and called her mom Janeen all morning Friday ahead of her 10 a.m. pick-up time confirming over and over again that her homecoming was really happening.

After stopping by the middle school -- ordained in purple ribbons -- Madi hopped in the front seat of her mom's white Nissan, completely unaware that the best was yet to come.

"I had butterflies in my stomach the whole drive," Janeen said. "I felt like I was bringing home a newborn for the first time."

Just two months ago, Madi -- then 10 -- was flown to Morristown Medical Center in critical condition after being hit by a car while walking with a friend on Route 513 near Bunnvale Road around 7:50 p.m.

Friends and family sent Madi support through a Facebook group during her hospital stay.

Finally, she was able to see them all in one place: At home.

Police cars, firetrucks and hundreds of community members in their purple and blue "Team Madi" shirts hooted and hollered as Janeen and Madi drove into the neighborhood.

"Once we saw the fire trucks, she asked 'What happened?'" Janeen said. "I told her they were for her and she was like a deer in head lights. It was amazing to see everyone lined up to welcome her home."
