Kiryas Joel Bus Driver Tests Negative For Drugs, Alcohol

KIRYAS JOEL, N.Y. – The driver of a school bus that struck and killed a 6-year-old girl was not under the influence of any drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident, according to the Times Herald-Record.

A joint statement released by the United Talmudical Academy, the Kiryas Joel School District and Chinuch Transportation Co. also said there were no mechanical issues with the bus, nor were there any previous violations on the driver's record, the Record reported. 

Leah Mezzi of Brooklyn was killed when she exited the bus about 11:15 a.m. onf Friday, Nov. 10, and proceeded to a south sidewalk and abruptly changed directions and began to cross the street in front of the bus.

The bus driver did not see her change directions. Mezzi was struck with the bumper of the bus and pronounced dead at the scene.
