“We take nominations every year for a nonprofit organization that deserves a contribution, and this year the Pound Ridge Fire Department was the lucky winner,” said guild member April Russell. “We’ve been doing it for years and years.”
The 245-member guild begins a new quilt a year in advance, first by choosing a pattern. “We’re very copyright conscious,” Russell said. “We chose a design by Carrie Nelson this year, and she generously allowed us to use it.”
The next step is to choose colors. Then they wash the fabric, iron it, make the pattern, divide it all up into baggies and pass the baggies out to guild members. Once the individual blocks are completed, usually about two months later, they are assembled along with a border.
This becomes the top layer. Then the batting and quilt back are sewn in place and a final border is added. Theoretically every guild member can contribute to the making of the quilt.
This year’s generous queen-size prize quilt is titled “Double Duty,” making it an especially appropriate tribute to volunteer firemen.
It will be raffled off the weekend of May 4 to 5 at the annual Northern Star Quilters' Guild Show. The show will be held at Kennedy Catholic High School, 54 Route 138, Somers. Many quilts will be on exhibit.
The guest speaker on both days is quilter/author Bonnie Hunter, founder/owner of Quiltville. Quilt experts Joe Cunningham and Teresa Barkley will be on hand to give appraisals by appointment, and many vendors will be showing their wares.
Tickets for the quilt raffle may be purchased at the Pound Ridge Fire House or at Scotts Corners Market. The tickets are $1 each or six for $5.
