BonFreakinAppétit Art Show At The Pound Ridge Library

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. -- An art show by Pound Ridge resident Donna Simons, BonFreakinAppétit, is on exhibit at the Pound Ridge Library.

Simons is also the founder of Pound Ridge Organics, a local farm and organic food co-op.

Her exhibit, made up of computer-generated illustrations, reflects her statement in a very interesting artistic demonstration that factory farming, aka concentrated animal feeding operations, is not healthy for human consumption.

Food products from fruit, meat, milk and other dairy products are clearly shown by Simons as including toxins and microorganisms she claims are consumed every day.

One of the main topics of this exhibit is the view against cattle farming. According to Simons, “Cattle farming is environmentally destructive. Methane emitted from cows is 23 times more destructive to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.”

Simons also explains if consumers had access to see how food is processed, especially with farmed fish, there would be something for consumers to think about. The idea for the exhibit also helped Simons to promote clean affordable local food that inspired her to create Pound Ridge Organics.

She also explains through her art that pesticides, corn based animal feed and the transportation of perishable food products also contribute to health concerns. Another aspect of her exhibit explains how farm irrigation causes residual chemicals to “leach” into the ground.

Most of Simons' art is produced using computer illustration software and without spoiling the surprise, there is an added element in each illustration that explains the artist’s statement. If visiting our library this month, be sure to check this interesting exhibit. It is indeed a learning experience.

A public reception for the exhibit is scheduled for Oct. 20, with events, speakers and authors from 1-4 p.m., followed by a reception for the artist from 5-7 p.m. with the music of Rave Tesar, Jazz Pianist. The exhibit runs until Nov. 2. Readers can to go to the library website for the exact schedule of events or call 914-764-5085 so they can attend the ones of interest.
