POUND RIDGE, N.Y. -- I recently announced my intent to speak with the candidates for the upcoming election. This was meant to eventually give my readers a fair opinion as to whom I think should be elected on Nov. 5.
The first two I have spoken with are Ira Clair (D) and Sean Dweck (R), candidates for town justice. This position is as important as the role of supervisor, who oversees implementing local law whereas the court is charged to uphold the law. In keeping the interviews short and to the point, I asked both candidates only two questions.
If elected, what would you bring to the court that will make it stand out for the community?
Clair: “The position of town justice is essential to treat every case as important as any other. Nothing is trivial. When a defendant goes to court, it can be a life- changing experience. I will treat each person before me fairly but will also uphold the law as required.''
Dweck: “It is my intention to listen to the facts of any case before me and to apply the law as required. I also want to be the kind of judge who is even tempered and aims to get the right decision every time.”
Do you think current DWI laws are fair and would you be more or less aggressive in handling such cases?
Clair: “The current laws dealing with this subject are in place as intended and I will enforce them.”
Dweck: “These are serious offenses and a good part of the Court docket. Any such cases that would come before me would be treated with the same fair respect.”
Both candidates have dossiers that are very impressive and both show to have a passion for the law. Clair has been an attorney for 35 years and maintains his firm in Scarsdale where he practices in matters such as landlord-tenant issues. Dweck has been an attorney for 18 years and has his practice in Manhattan and concentrates mostly in civil litigation. Both candidates have maintained residences in the community for more than 10 years.
