Louis Fusco of Louis Fusco Landscape Architects received the Honor Award for the Residential category for his work at the Gray Goose Pond Retreat, a property that straddles the border between North Castle and Greenwich, Conn. He had previously been awarded the 2012 Merit Award from the New York Chapter for the same project.

In 1905, the property, which features a pond, was created to serve as a source of ice for refrigeration. It is now a 25-acre residential property.

Fusco was called in to provide a master plan for the main dwelling expansion, a 1945 modernist garden pavilion that had fallen into disrepair. Initially, he turned the focus to the landscape enhancement of the primary residence and the client's dream of "swimming in their pool from New York to Connecticut.”

“I was originally hired to do the pool when they were doing the renovation [of the house],” he said. “They ended up tearing down about two-thirds of the property.”

Fusco said he took a “green approach” to the pavilion’s restoration by using recycled glass, stone and plant material in the project.

“We took a more environmental approach,” he said. “We also used native plants to make it all more natural.”

The existing home more than tripled in size when the project was concluded, which ultimately dictated the design of the property’s landscape.

The pool features an infinity edge with a hillside rock garden that has stepping-stones leading down to wetlands. Paving stone materials were recycled wherever possible, and an elaborate drainage system was developed to direct house and site runoff through long stretches of planting areas, which helps filter the water before it enters the wetlands.

“It was nice to be recognized,” Fusco said. “The homeowners were very involved in the project, and they were excited about the award.”
