WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - A Mount Vernon woman has been remanded to the Westchester County Jail for her role in the death of her 5-year-old daughter, who shot herself in the face with an illegal gun in Yonkers.

On Thursday, Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino Jr. announced that 24-year-old Tantania Manners has been charged with a misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child following a lengthy investigation into the death of the child in Yonkers in 2015.

Scarpino said that Manners was taken into custody on Wednesday, April 12 by detectives in the Yonkers Police Department following the investigation into the May 25, 2015 shooting death that took place in their family home on Walnut Street.

According to Scarpino, Manners was charged under the theory of creating an unsafe environment for her daughter by allowing the sale of use of narcotics in the apartment, as well as permitting illegal, unsecured, loaded firearms to be stored in the home.

The 5-year-old is believed to have located one of the firearms and shot herself in the face, causing her death, Scarpino said.

Manners was remanded to the Westchester County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail. She is due back in Yonkers City Court on Wednesday, April 19.
