STEER provides support services, including social, academic and athletic assistance to individual student athletes to graduate high school, prepare for further education and/or, entry into the workforce. It currently operates in the Port Chester-Rye Union Free School District, Yonkers Public School District and New York City Public School District.

Wolff has been a writer for Sports Illustrated since 1980. In addition to covering basketball at all levels, he has written from the Olympics, soccer’s World Cup, the World Series, every Grand Slam tennis event, and the Tour de France. Story assignments have taken him to six continents and to countries including China, Cuba, Iran, and Russia. He has dealt with such issues at the intersection of sport and society as race, gender, style, the environment, drugs, education, law, business, conflict, ethics and culture.

Wolff’s 2011 SI article, “Sports Saves the World” has served as the inspiration for, and motive behind the STEER For Student Athletes concept. Having researched, visited and witnessed the impact of sport in dealing with some of the world's most pressing problems, Wolff's stands as a testament to the importance of sports in developing character.

The evening will be held on Friday, May 20 from 7 p.m - 10p.m. at The Hilton at Westchester 699 Westchester Ave in Rye Brook.
