Last year, six batches and two human cases of West Nile virus were discovered.

“While finding mosquitoes with the virus in Westchester is to be expected, their presence should serve as a reminder to all residents to remove standing water from their property and to take personal protective measures against mosquito bites when spending time outdoors,” Westchester County Commissioner of Health Sherlita Amler said in a statement.

To protect against the virus, the county recommends you heed these tips:

  • Dump out any standing water found on your property.
  • Avoid the outdoors in evenings, as that is peak mosquito time.
  • Use repellents when outdoors.
  • Also, wear protective clothing when outdoors, including long pants and long-sleeved shirts and socks.
  • Change birdbaths twice a week.
  • Keep storm drains clear of debris.
  • Clean and clorinate swimming pools.

A more detailed list of  tips is available at the Health Department's website, found at www.westchestergov.com/health.
