Aden Smith is back on the sidelines for Shoreham-Wading River High School after being suspended earlier this month, the school announced on Wednesday, Sept. 18. The reinstatement is effective as of Monday, Sept. 23.

Smith will miss the team’s third game against Southampton this week before returning to the team.

“We are proud of our team which is off to a great start this year,” Superintendent Gerard Poole and Athletic Director Mark Passamonte said in a statement on Wednesday night. “We thank the assistant coaches who stepped up to lead the team until now and we look forward to a continued great season.”

Smith was suspended after an incident during a scrimmage against Islip on Friday, Aug. 30, forcing the district to temporarily suspend him. It was alleged by the parents of an Islip student that Smith “grabbed their son in the neck area” and shook him.

Nearly two dozen students reportedly came to Smith’s defense during a Board of Education meeting regarding his status with the team prior to his reinstatement. This is now Smith’s third year at the helm of the team.

Shoreham-Wading River’s football team hasn’t missed a beat, posting two wins against Bayport-Blue Point and Port Jefferson in Smith’s absence. They opened the season as the number one seed in Division IV, a year after claiming the division crown.
