Breaking News: Suspect Arrested In Connection With Westchester Shooting

Pleasantville School Board Members Say Goodbye

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Retiring Pleasantville school board members David McCullagh and Thomas Exton wrapped up a combined 15 years of service Tuesday night as the district held its final meeting of the school year.

Teary-eyed family, friends and colleagues gathered at Pleasantville High School to send off McCullagh and Exton. Past and present board members praised the two during farewell speeches, which some admitted they had trouble writing because they didn't ever want the day to come.

"These two gentlemen give 150 percent of everything that is in their spirit, their soul, and their hearts to this community," said Schools Superintendent Mary Fox-Alter. "They always put every single student in this school district as number one and they constantly cared about this community, and they took on all the challenges with courage, character and class."

Exton, a two-term member, and McCullagh, a three-term member, said leaving the board was bittersweet, as they will finally be able to come home before midnight every Tuesday.

"I want to thank my wife, Judy," Exton said. "Every Tuesday night she would go to bed and I would usually come home late and scare the dog. If I came home early it would be a shock."

For their service, the board members were given bouquets, gift certificates to the Village Bookstore and certificates of honor from the Westchester-Putnam School Board Association.

"I can't say it's always been easy, but it's always been extremely rewarding," McCullagh said. "I really want to thank the community for the trust they've showed in me, even when they didn't always agree with my decisions."

Exton and McCullagh will be replaced on the board by the recently-elected Emily Rubin-Persons and Larry Boes.
