The village recently unveiled its temporary 2017-2018 budget. The $15.65 million budget features a .58 percent increase in the tax levy, below the state's tax cap of a two percent tax levy increase. The budget increases spending by $745,000 from last year's budget.
The budget raises $10.5 million from taxes and will use $350,000 from its surplus. The village projects a surplus of $3.46 million in 2017-2018.
"The tax cap burden remains," Mayor Peter Scherer said at the April 5 public hearing on the budget. "The tax cap is ill-written and ill-understood. It frustrates me annually that the state crows that it stays within the tax cap even though it is not covered by their own law."
Scherer said the budget meets their goal of maintaining a fine community as cost efficiently as it can.
"Nobody wants to spend a dime we don't have to," Scherer said. "We are in stable condition and that will give us the opportunity to think and make quicker progress in rethinking the way the village budget works."
