5K Memorial Race Gets Green Light To Return To Pleasantville

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. — The Tina Gambino 5K Memorial Race will return to the village for a second year after receiving support Monday night from the Pleasantville Board of Trustees.

Gambino was a student-athlete at Pleasantville High School who died Nov. 27, 2004, during her senior year. Middle school Michael Bloom organized the inaugural event last year to honor his former babysitter.

“About a year ago, I stood here asking for permission to have the first Tina Gambino Memorial 5K to benefit the R.E.F.L.E.C.T.I.O.N.S. scholarship fund,” Bloom said in his pitch to the board. “Today I stand here asking the same question.”

The race is set for Saturday, Oct. 27, closing much of the downtown area to vehicle traffic. The date coincides with Pleasantville’s annual Ragamuffin Parade, which Mayor Peter Scherer said was important for the race’s approval.

“It means we have the police already here participating in the Ragamuffin Parade to close the streets,” he said. “Otherwise, it would present a problem for us as an additional cost.”

Despite the nor'easter that interrupted last year’s race Oct. 29, Bloom said it raised more than $16,000, which was awarded to graduating Pleasantville High School seniors as scholarships.

About 300 people participated in last year's event by running, walking or volunteering, including trustees Mindy Berard and Jonathan Cunningham.

“I think it’s fair to say we are delighted to see you do it again and delighted to help in whatever way we can,” Scherer said. “Hopefully, we will not have a snowstorm.”
