Gerard Asselta, 64, of Vineland was pronounced dead at the crash scene north of Tuckahoe Road and Harding Highway in Franklin Township, police said in a statement.

The single-engine craft took off from a residence on Union Road in Vineland and crashed shortly before 1 p.m., police said. It was not immediately clear where Asselta was headed.

Earlier reports said the single-seat aircraft crashed about a quarter mile from Downstown Airport.

Asselta was the only person aboard.

Footage from an ABC News Chopper 6 helicopter showed scattered remains of the yellow craft in woods along the roadway.
