The fire started around 3:35 a.m. at the barn on Croton Falls Road located near the border with Croton Falls and with North Salem and Somers, said Croton Falls Fire Chief Daniel Dreyer.
When firefighters arrived on scene they found a huge fire, sending flames into the air. Due to the lack of fire hydrants, all water had to be trucked in by tanker from a local river and reservoir, the chief said.
Firefighters worked for several hours just trying to douse the flames and prevent any spreading, he said. The barn at one point collapsed in on itself. The blaze was put out around noon, with firefighters then working to bring down the rest of the barn so it would not be a danger to anyone, he added.
A few chicken and peacocks were killed in the fire, but no large animals were inside. There were no injuries to any firefighters or civilians, Dreyer said.
"The Carmel and New York State police were very helpful by closing Croton Falls Road so we could easily truck in water," he said.
The roadway was closed for several hours during the fire.
The department cleared the site at 12:30 p.m.
