A cause of death for Howe was not released. The Westchester County Medical Examiner's Office said his death is under investigation and they still were working to find out what happened.
Howe's funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 8 Sunnyside Ave. in Pleasantville. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking donations be made to St. John's Children's Research Hospital.
Pleasantville High School was open on Sunday for students to gather and reminisce about Howe. Administrators, guidance counselors and school psychologists also were available that day and will continue to be this week and beyond. Howe's mother works as an aide in the high school library.
Parents were notified Sunday via an e-mail from Principal Joe Palumbo.
"Please join me in sending prayers and positive thoughts to the Howe family in their time of need," Palumbo wrote. "It is impossible to make sense of situations like this, however, we will come together as a community to support one another."
On Tuesday, a video tribute of Howe was shown during morning announcements and a moment of silence was observed, district officials said.
Students are collaborating with his parents on Saturday's memorial service.
On Facebook, Howe's friends are remembering him as a talented musician. Benji Taubenblatt remembered meeting Howe at Chappaqua Rocks.
"I remember rocking out to System of a Down songs and trying my best to learn my part and keep up with Shane's insane dexterity on the guitar," Taubenblatt said. "Even in middle school, Shane was already so dedicated to music and so talented at the guitar."
Taubenblatt said Howe was a true rocker and a kind soul who will be dearly missed.
"Your undying dedication to music is a true inspiration to us all," Taubenblatt said. "Shane was truly one of a kind."
Liana Frasca said Howe was a brilliant musician who wanted to work in a recording studio.
"Mrs. Goodman gave us a creative writing assignment on that first day, and Shane shared with us the most beautiful and captivating description of the night sky," Frasca said. "I remember it vividly; now I always will. His writing has even inspired some of my own."
