Summer Heat the Enemy for Pleasantville Library

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – A necessary roof replacement project set to begin this month at the Mount Pleasant Public Library in Pleasantville will likely shut down the library to residents sporadically throughout the summer.

Library Director John Fearon said the main concern is heat because the library will be forced to shut down its air conditioning while it is replaced, which may take as long as two weeks.

“When our air conditioning is being replaced, we won’t have any [fresh] air in the library, and if we have a day that’s around 85 or 90 degrees outside, then we will not be able to be open,” Fearon said.

Fearon said the project is set to begin after the Fourth of July and is scheduled to take four months to complete.  In addition to air conditioning, the $660,000 project will replace the original roof and rubber membrane used to repair leaks in recent years, metal edging along the exterior of the roof, and skylights.  Fearon said the roof needs to be replaced after leaks were found during inclement weather.

Due to the weather variations throughout the summer months, Fearon said it is unclear at this point which days the library will be closed due to lack of air conditioning.  In order to compensate for the closings, Fearon said the library plans to offer extended hours at the branch library in Valhalla.

Fearon said that after the air conditioning unit is replaced, the library plans to stay open to the best of its ability throughout the project, and that noise should not be a major issue.

“Our biggest concern is the safety of our guests,” Fearon said.  “So I think if we had the choice of closing down completely or being open and having our only issue be noise, we would stay open.”
