Pleasantville Foster Mom, Roberts Honored Thursday

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Cecelia Ann Roberts, a resident of Pleasantville for almost 50 years, died on Oct. 23 at the age of 93.

Roberts would refer to her children as her greatest accomplishment and was even known to take in foster children in addition to the seven of her own.

She was born on Jul. 23, 1918 in Brooklyn to Dorothy Byrne and Jeremiah J. Mahoney. On May 3, 1941, she wed George E. Roberts, embarking on a 68-year marriage until his death in 2009. Possessing a relentless sense of humor and a passion for baking, Roberts would enjoy hosting holidays for her family. Besides knitting sweaters and stockings, Roberts was also a seamstress, sewing her eldest daughter's wedding gown.

One mother's day she sent all of her children a homemade card stating in part, "The most important thing I've done is having you. My life is good and full… You are my legacy, my children."

As a teenager, she was a champion handball player and would go on to enjoy playing bridge, writing poetry and hanging wallpaper. Roberts was an avid New York Times reader as well as a Mets fan, typifying her "glass half full" attitude.

She is survived by her daughters Mary Karen Bucci with husband Marshall, Christine Natio and husband William and Cecelia Passabet with husband James, her sons Kevin Roberts, George Roberts, Jr. and Jeremiah Roberts with wife Suzanne, fourteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Roberts was predeceased by her husband, her daughter Kathleen and granddaughter Elizabeth Roberts.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at Beecher Funeral Home in Pleasantville. A funeral mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday at Holy Innocents Church in Pleasantville with interment to follow at Middle Patent Cemetery in Bedford.
