Plastic surgery includes both aesthetic and reconstructive surgical procedures. Aesthetic surgeries are designed to improve the appearance of facial and bodily features, while reconstructive procedures are typically performed to address the physical result of illness, trauma or tumor surgery. Patients who undergo the surgery often experience psychological as well as physical improvement.
Northern Westchester Hospital offers a number of innovative techniques for plastic surgery patients. For example, in some breast cancer reconstruction procedures, surgeons are able to use the body’s own fatty tissue taken from the abdomen or thigh during surgery, eliminating a need for synthetic implants. In fact, most women having breast cancer surgery at NWH choose to have breast reconstruction at the same time, an approach at NWH called “Aesthetic Oncology.”
Each person’s reasons for having plastic surgery are unique; needs and expectations should be addressed before, during and after surgery. For Kerrie’s plastic surgery, discretion and pain management were paramount. As a mother of two, it was also important to her to be to able to return to her routine as soon and as safely as possible.
