Westchester County’s quaint hamlet of Hawthorne was highlighted in a New York Times real estate story for its strong schools and community values.

Hawthorne, which is nestled between the hamlets of Thornwood to the north and Valhalla to the south and east, has about 4,650 residents, according to 2017 census estimates. Carl Fulgenzi, Mount Pleasant’s supervisor, describes the population as a mixture of working-class and white-collar commuters.

Hawthorne’s main commercial sector, which includes a car dealership, lodging and various retail stores and restaurants, can be found along Route 9A. “Pockets” of commercial space are also located on Elwood Avenue and Commerce Street.

The northern half of the hamlet houses the residential neighborhoods, many of which are made up of Cape Cods and ranches on small lots. In total, Hawthorne has 1,350 single-family homes and 55 multi-family homes, according to James J. Timmings, Mount Pleasant’s assessor. The Chateau on the Hill complex also has 56 condominium properties.

Above all, Hawthorne is known for its warm, neighborly atmosphere as well as its strong schools. The hamlet is served by the Mount Pleasant Central School District, which also serves the majority of Thornwood, portions of Valhalla and the village of Pleasantville.

Hawthorne’s high school, which shares a campus in Thornwood with the middle school, has a three-year science research program and holds a science fair each year.
