PELHAM, N. Y. -- Pelham High School's Megan Ploch finished in second place in the environmental engineering competition at the recent Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Ariz., officials said.
The May 12-13 competition featured more than 1,700 young scientists selected from 410 affiliate fairs throughout the world. Finalists are selected annually.
Projects are evaluated by about 1,000 judges who are experts in their scientific field. She was one of nearly 20 Westchester students to participate in the international competition.
Her project was Solar Powered UV-c Treatment for Fecal Coliform and Enterococcus Bacteria in Storm Water Overflow. Ploch will receive $1,500 in cash and the MIT Lincoln Lab will name an asteroid in her honor.
