New Rochelle resident Trey McDowell, 31, pleaded guilty as a persistent violent felony offender to two counts of attempted burglary, violent felonies.
Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr., said that the investigation into McDowell began following a series of home burglaries last year. Police investigators in New Rochelle identified McDowell and a red Honda Accord that he used, prompting them to begin surveillance on he and the vehicle.
Further investigation found that members of the Mount Vernon Police Department also identified the same red Honda that was used by a burglar on Nov. 27 last year.
Earlier this year, on Jan. 2, police investigators found the Honda outside an apartment building and McDowell was caught inside his victim’s apartment closing a window. Police then saw him leave the building, enter the Accord and drive away.
According to Scarpino, police proceeded to pull over the car and found his victim’s property on him and in the vehicle, prompting his arrest for the burglaries in New Rochelle and Mount Vernon.
Scarpino noted that in addition to being a serial burglar, McDowell was previously convicted of three violent felony offenses in Westchester and New York City. At the time of this most recent arrest, McDowell was on parole for a 2013 attempted robbery committed in Yonkers.
