The hospital lauded the rehabilitation successes of eight patients in particular, including Yonkers resident Dominic Romano, an above-the-knee amputee who's learned to walk again, according to lohud.com. Romano now also volunteers at the hospital.

Those successes also included 9-year-old Ashlin Klev of Airmont, who's made strides after a blood clot in her brain left her paralyzed on one side, lohud.com reported, and Haverstraw's Joy White, who was a 23-year employee of Helen Hayes and is now a patient.

The hospital honored White with its Spirit of Achievement award, noting her fighting spirit -- particularly in the context of her having helped so many others through the years, according to lohud.com.

Other area residents honored at the assembly included Mark Kinnally of White Plains, Diane Darienzo of Yonkers, Beth Wiesner of Mahwah, N.J., and Pelham's Anthony Senerchia Jr., who was responsible for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, lohud.com reported.
