PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Woodside Elementary School recently hosted its 1st Annual Multilingual Poetry Café in honor of National Poetry Month.
Thirty-eight kindergarten and first grade students performed an original or favoritepoems at the Poetry Café before parents, teachers, administrators and staff. Poems focused on family, friendship, favorite animals and the poets themselves.
Poems were performed in English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese and Mandarin Chinese. Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss were popular authors.
The Emergent Bilingual Leadership Team designed the event to integrate poetry with world languages and use bilingualism as an instructional resource as part of an initiative with CUNY-New York State Initiative on Emergent Bilinguals.
Several Woodside staff members also performed their favorite or original poems.
All participating students received blue ribbons.
