Peekskill Firemen Honor Young Fire Poster Artists

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – The Peekskill Professional Fire Fighters Association honored seven young artists at Tuesday night's common council meeting for helping to spread the word about fire safety.

The annual fire prevention poster contest drew participants from kindergarten to fifth grade who made educational posters about preventing and dealing with fires.

Firefighter Ryne Sheridan said the annual contest was something the force took pride in.

"It means a lot to us," said Sheridan, who was joined by several other firemen at the meeting. "We've been doing it for a long time, 37 years now, and to see the continued participation from the kids and to see the growing participation, it's really gratifying."

Fire prevention and fire safety education are some of the most important things firemen do, he said.

"To see that these kids are not only having fun in art class drawing pictures but that they exhibit that they understand the basics that we're teaching them when we go to their schools, that's what these winners did and that's why they were chosen as the best of their grade," Sheridan said.

The grand prize winner of this year's Pete Volkmann Award was Nataly Aucapina of the Assumption School.
