The incident took place around 5:10 p.m., Wednesday, March 20, on Route 44, near Clark Heights, said Capt. John Watterson with the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.

An investigation into the crash found that a 2007 Chrysler Town & Country driven by William Plaza, 35, of Wappingers Falls, and occupied by Kataura Ross, 25, of Poughkeepsie, was traveling westbound on Route 44 when it struck the 13-year-old from Pleasant Valley, Watterson said.

The teen suffered serious head injuries and was originally transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital via ambulance, however, was later airlifted to Westchester Medical Center and last classified as critical but stable, Waterson added.

Plaza and Ross were both uninjured in the crash.

Preliminary findings from an investigation found the actions of the pedestrian to be the primary factor in the crash, and no charges have been filed against the vehicle operator, Waterson said.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by members of the Pleasant Valley Fire Department and Mobile Life.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit.
