Man Fleeing Scene Of Hauppauge Crash Struck, Killed By 18-Wheeler, Police Say

A man who was allegedly fleeing the scene of a single-car crash on Long Island was hit and killed by an 18-wheel truck.

The incident took place in Hauppauge around 2:20 p.m., Wednesday, May 25.

Joseph Suozzo, age 60, of Jupiter, Florida, was driving a 2006 Jeep Cherokee eastbound on Bridge Road when he veered off the road and struck a tree, said the Suffolk County Police.

Suozzo fled the scene on foot and crossed onto Long Island Motor Parkway, which runs parallel to Bridge Road, and was struck by an 18-wheeler truck approximately 1,000 feet east of Milford Drive, police said.

He was pronounced dead on the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. 

The driver of the truck, Jose Flores Umanzor, age 45, of Central Islip, was not injured.

The truck was inspected on the scene by officers from the Motor Carrier Section. The Jeep Cherokee was impounded for a safety check.
