Carmel Native George James DeMasi, 15, Dies After Battle With Cancer

A 15-year-old student at Arlington High School in Poughkeepsie has died after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.

George James DeMasi, passed away on Friday, March 3, at home.

DeMasi was born in Carmel to Joseph and Nicole (Guerts) DeMasi.

A sophomore, he loved playing sports, especially basketball. His family said he also liked art, playing video games, and spending time with his friends.

George’s selfless and positive attitude, along with his sense of humor and smile, helped his family and friends weather the dark days of his illness, his family said.

A scholarship is being set up in his name at Arlington High School.

George is survived by his mother, Nicole, and her boyfriend, William Strandberg; his father, Joseph, and his girlfriend, Patricia Secreto; a brother, Owen; grandparents Veronica DeMasi and Brian and Gabriella Thomas; aunts and uncles Angela and Vincent Insinga, Patricia Boyle, Paul and Doreen DeMasi, Mark and Sanae DeMasi, and Steven DeMasi and Michael Hilderbrand; and many cousins and friends.

Calling hours are 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday, March 6, at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 7, at St. Kateri Church, 1925 Route 82, LaGrangeville.

Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
