Al Collins, 101, Peekskill Resident

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Alphonsus ‘Al’ J. Collins, a life-long Peekskill resident, died on Dec. 7. He was 101.

Collins was born on Feb. 25, 1915, son of the late Joseph & Mildred (Cahill) Collins. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942–1945. Collins was a graduate of Hendrick Hudson High School, class of 1933. 

On July 4, 1943, he married Allene M. Volkmann, who predeceased him May 6, 1990. 

Collins worked at Fleischmann’s for 17 years and at IBM for 24. He was also a communicant of the Church of the Assumption and a member of the Knights of Columbus Peekskill Council 462. 

Collins was the oldest active member of the Peekskill Yacht Club, joining on Nov. 19, 1949; he served as Commodore, Secretary and Historian. He served on the Peekskill Republican Committee, the Mayor’s Advisory Board, Parks & Rec. Board, and the Peekskill Senior Citizens. Al is survived by his two daughters, Patricia (Joseph) Broun and Donna (Kenneth) Schaeffler; his eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Mary Collins. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 10am, Wednesday, Dec. 14 at the Assumption Church, Peekskill, followed by interment at the Assumption Cemetery.
