PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- David Wright and colleagues at Peekskill-based Wheelabrator Westchester, a waste-to-energy company, spent a recent weekend taking part in a race in the Adirondacks, all in the name of charity.

Wright and nine other employees joined more than 200 other teams for a two-day, 200 mile trek from Saratoga Springs to Lake Placid in September.

The race, organized by the Ragnar Relay Series, engaged the Wheelabrator Power Runners in a race through the Adirondack Mountains with each runner completing three legs of the race. The team completed the race in 29 hours and 50 minutes, nearly four hours ahead of the expected pace. With the support of Wheelabrator friends and business partners, the team raised nearly $5,000 in sponsorships to benefit the Adirondack Mountain Club.

The team was made up of Wheelabrator employees throughout the Northeast including its Bridgeport division.

Wright did not run due to an issue with his knees but worked hard at keeping team morale up as he drove the van where the runners stayed when they weren't running.

"It was a lot of fun but it was rather grueling, especially through the evening," Wright said.

Wheelabrator has a commitment to being involved the community, Wright said.

"We are very much a a part of the communities we live in," Wright said. "We believe in engaging the community to make it a better place. We’re people. We’re all about communities we live in. It’s part of our core fabric that makes us great place to work. The run was crazy, but a lot of fun."

Throughout the run, Wright and others cheered on all the runners, honking horns and doing what they could to keep spirits up, like providing water and nutrients.

"It wasn't about it being a race," Wright said. "It was about everyone overcoming this challenge."

The Adirondack Mountain Club is a nonprofit member organization dedicated to the protection and responsible recreational use of the New York State Forest Preserve through a balanced approach of conservation and advocacy, environmental education, and responsible recreation.
