Westchester Magazine Touts Peekskill's Arts Scene

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- While city residents may be the first ones to tell you how great a place Peekskill is to live, it's always nice to hear it from somebody else.

In this case that someone else is Westchester Magazine, which named Peekskill one of its best places to live in its "Westchester Real Estate Guide: Best Places To Live In Westchester County" article in the April 2012 issue on newsstands now.

The article's author, Dave Donalson, credits the creation of 28 affordable art lofts the city approved a decade ago with helping to create a hotspot for the arts in Westchester County.

"The lofts have also spawned other studios and galleries, most within a six-block area of downtown. You’ll find just about any flavor of visual art in the studios and galleries in Peekskill, including ceramics, sculptures, paintings, drawings, photographs, videos, and installations," he wrote. "Places to shop and browse include The Fern Tree crafts and gift boutique, the Flat Iron Gallery, Peekskill Clay Studios at the Hat Factory, the Driftwood Gallery/Studio, and over a dozen more. You’ll also find fun spots like the BeanRunner Cafe and Gallery and The Peekskill Coffee House, where you can fuel your browsing with a little caffeine."

City officials are already running with the ranking. At Saturday's Hudson Valley Gateway Experience in Cortlandt Manor, sponsored by the Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce, Director of Economic Development James Slaughter had printed copies of the article at the city's booth.

Recognition like the article help the city sell itself to businesses at event's like Saturday's chamber program, he said.

"We're really excited about it," Slaughter said of the article. "You get businesses at these conferences that are willing to relocate, so we can provide them with information  about what the city is looking to do and our areas for redevelopment. It's about outreach, about showing what the city can offer."

The article also names Peekskill establishments such as the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, the Paramount Center for the Arts and the Peekskill Center for the Digital Arts at Westchester Community College as things that make the city's art scene special.
