Peekskill Mother Indicted For Stabbing Young Son

A Northern Westchester woman is facing an attempted murder charge after being indicted for the stabbing of her 8-year-old child.

Peekskill resident Dayona Hammonds, 33, has been indicted on a host of charges after allegedly stabbing her child with a knife in February.

Specifically, Hammonds was charged with:

  • Attempted murder;
  • Attempted assault;
  • Assault;
  • Criminal possession of a weapon;
  • Menacing;
  • Endangering the welfare of a child.

It is alleged that on Monday, Feb. 17, Hammonds stabbed her child at approximately 7:40 a.m. in their Main Street apartment in Peekskill.

Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino Jr. said that police in Peekskill received a call about a child potentially in danger on the day of the stabbing. Upon arrival at the apartment, officers found Hammonds standing over the child, who had already been stabbed, still holding the knife.

The child was hospitalized with a stab wound to his abdomen and a laceration to his liver. He underwent emergency surgery and later recovered from the stab wound.

Hammonds was arrested and is scheduled to appear back in court on Wednesday, Aug. 26.
