A 25-year-old man will spend decades behind bars after pleading guilty to shooting an 18-year-old in the head on a busy Poughkeepsie street and walking away.

City of Poughkeepsie resident Rajeam Jackson, of Poughkeepsie, was sentenced this week to 27 years in prison and five years of post-release supervision after pleading guilty last month to first-degree manslaughter and second-degree criminal possession of a loaded gun. He had been charged with murder, which he pleaded not guilty to.

Officers were dispatched to the 400 block on Main Street shortly after midnight on Monday, Nov. 19 last year, where there was a report of the teen - City of Poughkeepsie resident Justin Johnson, who formerly lived in Queens - with a gunshot wound to the head.

Police launched an extensive investigation, which led to them identifying Jackson as a suspect after he was caught on camera outside the building. He reportedly picked something up off the street while walking away after firing the shots that killed Johnson.

There were no witnesses in the area when officers arrived. However, there were people in the area when the incident occurred. Johnson was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital, where he later died from his wound.
