Two Peekskill Residents Honored By Field Library

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Peekskill's Field Library will honor Bob and Kathleen "Kay" Barthelmes with the 2016 Chester Smith Award for Outstanding Community Engagement.

Kay Barthelmes received her master's in education from Fordham University in 1988 and went on to teach in Peekskill schools for 20 years. She also worked at the library and served as president of the Friends of the Library group.

Bob Barthelmes is a life-long Peekskill resident, graduating from the high school in 1957. He became art director and creative director at Conde-Nast publications in 1970 and continued to work there for 31 years.

Bob Barthelmes also taught watercolor at the WCC Arts Workshop. He also taught at CAMP, Inc., the Elton Brand-funded center for Peekskill students.

Bob Barthelmes also created an art program for Peekskill’s Park Street Alternative High School and has taught painting at Aunt Bessie’s Open Door as well as the Peekskill Senior Citizen’s Club. His work has been shown in the Peekskill Museum, Museum of the Hudson Highlands, Zum Pulverwirt in Bad Tolz, Germany, The Hudson Valley Center For Contemporary Art, the Chappaqua Library and the Field Gallery.

His best-known works include his “Finktown” series, depicting the working-class Peekskill neighborhood in the 1940s and 1950s.
