PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Peekskill resident and actress Sol Miranda is embarking on the role of a lifetime.

Miranda has been cast in the NBC sitcom "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," starring Ellie Kemper and created by Tina Fey. The single-camera sitcom, which has received a 13-episode order from the network, is about a woman whose life starts over after she escapes from a doomsday cult.

Miranda will play Donna Maria, no-nonsense former member of the cult. Miranda has appeared on "Law and Order" three times and also appeared on "Blue Bloods" and "A Gifted Man."

In Peekskill, Miranda is co-founder of Embark, a coalition of performing and literary artists and community members committed to the establishment and development of a performing and literary arts center for Peekskill.

"I am so grateful," Miranda said about the role. "I cannot take this for granted. I want to make the community be a part of this as well."

Miranda said she hopes her role shines a spotlight on the work Embark is doing in Peekskill, especially since the people of Peekskill have been so supportive of her.

"It takes a village," Miranda said. "There have been a wonderful network of people that have allowed me to do my thing. They are essential in my life."

Working on the pilot was a blast, Miranda said.

"It's very funny," Miranda said. "Ellie Kemper is awesome. She was very sweet and naturally funny."

Miranda, who is a native of  Puerto Rico, plays a maid, which she knows is an all too familiar role for Latino actresses.

"It's not easy," Miranda said. "It's a balancing act. Latinos are very underrepresented. You make it happen and you justify it. There are Latinos who are maids, just like there are Latinos who are doctors. You give the role integrity and do it."

Miranda said she enjoyed working with Tina Fey, calling her kind and sweet.

"She was very funny, but quiet," Miranda said. "She gave me a hug when we finished filming."

The show will begin shooting over the summer with a premiere date yet to be determined.

"It's a very humbling experience," Miranda said. "There are no guarantees."
