The demolition process, which is expected to take approximately three weeks, will require overnight lane closures and traffic stops on both I-95 and North Avenue, impacting motorists traveling through the area.
To minimize daytime disruptions, much of the bridge removal will take place at night. Work will include the removal of large superstructure elements, requiring the use of cranes to safely load steel sections onto flatbed trucks stationed below on the highway.
During the bridge removal process, two out of three lanes in each direction on I-95 will be closed on weeknights, starting at 10 p.m., with full reopening by 5 a.m.
Multiple traffic stops lasting up to 20 minutes will occur during overnight work. New Rochelle police officers and flaggers will be on-site directing traffic on North Avenue between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., Thruway Authority officials said.
Motorists are strongly encouraged to take alternate routes after 8 p.m. to avoid potential delays.
The $31.8 million North Avenue bridge replacement project began in January 2023 and is designed to improve traffic flow, safety, and bridge clearance over I-95.
Earlier this year, crews installed foundations to support the new center section of the bridge. The bridge’s outer lane is currently open to northbound traffic heading toward City Hall, while southbound traffic toward Main Street is being detoured at Lockwood Avenue.
Extended full closures of the bridge will be required later this year for steel installation. Further details on those closures will be announced in advance, officials said.
When completed later this year, the new bridge will be wider, enhance traffic flow, and raise the clearance over I-95 from 14 feet 3 inches to 16 feet 6 inches.
