OSSINING, N.Y. -- A young wrestler from upstate New York with ties to Ossining was named a finalist in the voting for the Sports Illustrated SportsKid of the Year.

Myles Griffin, 11, has won three New York state championships and six championships in national tournaments. He lives in Onondaga and is the grandson of Jim and Patti Griffin, long-time Ossining residents who now live in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Jim Griffin wrestled for Ossining High in the 1970s under Mike Nardone and was a Section 1 champion and state runner-up.

Myles was one of five finalists in the SportsKid of the Year voting. Mo’ne Davis of Philadelphia, who helped her baseball team reach the Little League World Series, was named the SportsKid of the Year.

In the article about Myles on the SI Kids website, writer Elizabeth McGarr McCue says Griffin is “as talented as he is humble.” “As soon as I stepped on the mat, I loved it,’’ Myles said on the website.

Griffin, a sixth-grader, also plays baseball and soccer. He led his soccer league in scoring in two of his first three seasons and plays first base, catcher and pitcher in baseball.

Griffin’s wrestling coach, Jason Goldman, said in the SI Kids story that “Myles is a sponge when it comes to the sport. He wants to learn, he wants to grow, he wants to get better.”
