Ossining's Brundage Practices Throughout Vacation

It may be summer break for many college students throughout the country, but for James Brundage, his vacation is all about practice. The Rider University red-shirt sophomore and 2009 Ossining graduate spends Monday through Wednesday in Lawrenceville, N.J., preparing for the season. It’s a sacrifice Brundage, the 2009 New York State Public High School large-school 160-pound champion, said he’s willing to make in order to achieve his goal of becoming an NCAA Division I champion.

“Mondays, we go from 3:30 [p.m.] to 6 [p.m.],” said Brundage, who is a criminal justice major. “Tuesdays we usually go early and we’re either lifting or running. After every practice, we are doing leg lifts. We also have to run approximately 20 miles a week.”

Brundage continued that he has been practicing this routine since his freshman year – including during winter and spring breaks. “We focus on lifting a lot and a lot of weight training during the summer.”

Brundage came in last year wrestling in the 165-pound weight class. However, his teammates, who wrestled in the 165 and 174-pound weight classes, were both nationally-ranked so Brundage had to go up. “My coach wanted to keep me in the lineup, so he asked me to bump up to 184,” said Brundage, a three-time Section 1 wrestling champion.

“I wanted to wrestle and I was happy in the lineup. Once I got used to the weight and wrestling against the bigger guys, I felt I wrestled pretty well against some nationally-ranked wrestlers.” Brundage currently weighs 189-pounds and said he felt good. But Rider coach, Gary Taylor, has told Brundage he will be wrestling at 165 next year, which the wrestler said he is looking forward to.
