Ossining Girls Basketball Poised For State Title Run

OSSINING, N.Y. -- The Ossining High School girls basketball team travels Friday night to upstate Hudson Valley Community College in Troy in search of the program's first state basketball title.

The Pride (19-4) will represent the local area (Section 1) and the Southeast Region of the state in the Class AA big school semifinals against Sachem East (21-2) at 6:15 p.m. with the winner going on to Saturday's championship final.

Saniya Chong, who added the Gatorade New York State Girls Player of the Year Award to her growing list of honors Thursday, leads the Pride. Chong averages 35 points, 9  assists, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.7 steals per game and is headed to the University of Connecticut next fall.

Eighth-grade guard Andra Espinoza-Hunter and sophomore forward Jalay Knowles give opponents a problem trying to double team Chong. 

The winner of will face either Section 5’s Gates Chili (23-0) or Section 3’s Cicero-North Syracuse (18-3), the defending state and Federation champion, in the state final Saturday at 8:45 p.m.

Ossining is a favorite to win its first girls title and Chong is on a mission after losing in the finlals last winter. The Pride should will and advance to Saturday's final.
