A 77-year-old woman from Orange County was killed in a wrong-way crash on Route 9 in Dutchess County early Wednesday, June 25, police announced.
The crash happened in Poughkeepsie around 5:20 a.m. when a vehicle entered Route 9 North from the Columbia Street ramp while traveling southbound in the northbound lanes. The vehicle collided head-on with a northbound car near Fox Street, the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department said on Wednesday.
The 77-year-old, who was a passenger in the wrong-way vehicle, was rushed to Vassar Brothers Medical Center by Empress EMS but succumbed to her injuries. Her identity has not yet been released.
Authorities say there is currently no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, which appears to have been a "tragic accident," police said. The investigation is still ongoing.
Information about the driver has not yet been released.
Route 9 North remained closed for more than five hours for the on-scene investigation, finally reopening to traffic at 11 a.m.
