The Olympiad included international students submitting a total of 1,657 projects in regional competitions with 789 accepted for the finals. The award is based on the number of participants and the total awards received.
All of the 15 OHS juniors who attended the prestigious competition received awards for their science projects and are members of the school’s Science Research Program. OHS’ win is the first time an American school has received the honor.
Founded by SUNY Oswego chemistry chair Fehmi Damkaci, the GENIUS Olympiad promotes a global understanding of sustainability and environmental issues through science, creative writing, the arts, engineering, design and business development.
“Ossining High School students truly stood out in the science competition,” said Valerie Holmes, one of the program’s co-teachers. “This is a remarkable accomplishment and a testament to the hard work and dedication they have invested in their research efforts.”
OHS students Hammad Hassan and Raymond Liu won trips to Korea to present their research at the Science & Engineering Fair this fall. In total, OHS classmates earned five gold awards, two bronze awards and two honorable mentions. Each of the medal winners were also rewarded with a Kindle tablet.
“It was an incredible weeklong experience and a wonderful way to close out the school year,” said Holmes. “These rising seniors are certainly on the path toward a bright and successful future.”
Other student award winners include:
- Gold Award: Alexandra Hoffman, Tejas Shah, Fanny Zhang
- Silver Award: Natalia Fel, Federico Grullon, Michelle Lin, Caroline Reed, Justine Valentino, Tej Verma
- Bronze Award: Bryan Goncalves, Lara Tomescu
- Honorable Mention: Colleen Schmid, Sophia Slavin
Holmes accepted the award with program co-teacher Angelo Piccirillo on behalf of OHS.
“Our students are lucky to have the support of two amazing teachers, Mr. Piccirillo and Ms. Holmes, who always go above and beyond to educate and encourage our students,” said Superintendent Raymond Sanchez.
