Augie’s Prime Italian Steakhouse in Mohegan Lake shut down on Saturday, April 5, after 16 years of service, the owners announced in a heartfelt farewell message posted to social media on Sunday, April 6.
“Sixteen years ago, in the midst of a stock market crash, we did something a little crazy—we opened a restaurant,” the statement begins. “We weren’t just starting a business, we were creating a space for the neighborhood to gather, and what became a home away from home.”
Located at 3436 Lexington Ave., Augie’s earned a loyal following over the years as it held its signature Lobsterfests, Prime Rib nights, bar and lounge upgrades, and events like Augie’s Idol and Jeep giveaways. The farewell post fondly recalls those memories and more, including navigating the challenges of COVID-19.
“We’ve watched our team grow, made lifelong friends, and shared in moments big and small,” the message said. “Even through COVID, we found ways to stay together, fueled by the energy of the community.”
The Augie’s team also highlighted their work with charities like Autism Speaks and Community Based Services (CBS), saying they were honored to give back during their time in business.
“Closing our doors is bittersweet,” the statement continued, “but more than anything, we’re grateful—for every meal shared, every laugh exchanged, and every person who made Augie’s what it was.”
While the restaurant itself may be gone, the building won’t sit empty for long. According to the announcement, another restaurant will be moving into the space, and the owners expressed hope that it will “continue to serve the neighborhood as a great new spot.”
The message closes simply: “Thank you all, and cheers to the journey.”
