A Scarsdale police officer on patrol on Fox Meadow Road shortly after 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12 found a 2018 BMW idling in the driveway of a local home. When the officer ran the registration of the vehicle, it was determined that it had been suspended for failure to pay five parking tickets within 12 months, and the registered owner had a warrant out for his arrest in Scarsdale.

The warrant was issued by Village of Scarsdale Judge Joaquin Alemany on Nov. 17 last year. The officer on patrol stayed in the area until the driver, Melvis Gant of Mount Vernon got behind the wheel and was spotted traveling northbound on Fox Meadow Road in the direction of Fenimore Road.

According to police, the officer conducted a traffic stop of the BMW near the entrance ramp of the Bronx River Parkway. A computer check of Gant found that he was driving without a license, and that his rights to drive in New York State were suspended for failure to pay child support.

Gant, 49, was arrested at the scene and charged on the arrest warrant, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle without a license and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration. Following his arraignment, Gant was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in Scarsdale Village Court on Wednesday, Jan. 16 to respond to the charges.
