Sister Vera Krass, 88, Secretary At Maryknoll

OSSINING, NY. -- Sister Vera Krass, 88, died Oct.14 at the Maryknoll Sisters Center in Ossining.

She was born Aug. 22, 1927, in Jamaica, N.Y.

Not only was she a nun, she also was a teacher, secretary, home visitor and volunteer in Tanzania and Hawaii. On Sept. 2, 1955, was when Sister Vera entered Maryknoll from Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Brooklyn. 

She is a graduate of Richmond Hill High School class of 1945. After graduation, she worked as a clerk at the Richmond Hill Savings Banks for three years. She also was a secretary at Time Inc. for a year, and a secretary in the advertising department at Fortune Magazine for a year.

On June 24, 1958, Sister Vera made her first vows at the Maryknoll Sisters Motherhouse and obtained a B.S. in Education from the Maryknoll Teachers College. Tanzania was where she began her first overseas assignment and made her final vows June 24, 1964.

In addition, Sister Vera studied at the Maryknoll Fathers Seminary and received her M.A. in Theology in 1974.

In 1995, she did clerical work in Honolulu, and two years later was called back to Maryknoll Sisters Center to work as an office assistant. She was assigned to Monrovia, Calif. in 1999, where she resided until returning again to Maryknoll Sisters Center in 2008. 

She is survived by her cousin, Hans-Hermann Speidel of Markgroningen, Germany, and her sister-in-law, Ann Krass of Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. 

Her parents, stepmother, and brother George all predeceased her.

A vespers service will be conducted for Sister Vera at 4:15 p.m. Monday in the Chapel of the Annunciation at the Maryknoll Sisters Center at Maryknoll. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, also at the center. Interment will be in the Maryknoll Sisters Cemetery on the center's grounds.
