OSSINING, N.Y. -- Sister Joan Malherek -- a resident of Monrovia, California, formerly a longtime resident of Ossining -- died on Sunday, March 13. She was 90.

Born in Minnesota, Malherek was an educator and pastoral worker She was a Maryknoll Sister for 65 years. She obtained a teacher's certificate from Mankato State Teachers College, then taught for six years in Minnesota's public schools. She entered the Maryknoll Sisters Congregation from Our Lady of Mercy Parish in the Diocese of Winona, Minnesota, with her younger sister Mary in 1951.

Malherek received her bachelor's in education from Maryknoll Teachers College in 1954 and taught at Transfiguration Parish in Chinatown until 1962. She was then assigned to Hawaii and taught religion and mathematics for eight years. After obtaining a bachelor's in mathematics in 1971 from the University of Minnesota, Malherek taught high school in Minnesota from 1973-1976. After 27 years of formal classroom teaching, she also worked in Guatemala and Mexico.

She is survived by her sisters, Margaret and Mary -- who is also a Maryknoll Sister. She was predeceased by her parents, Mary Grace Siegel Malherek and Peter Edward Malherek, and her brothers, Joseph and Paul.

The funeral mass will take place in the Maryknoll Sisters Chapel, in Monrovia, and internment will be in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, in Rowland Heights, California.
