Milani was born in Illinois and raised in New York City. She received a BA from Hunter College and an MA from Columbia University. Her main subject of study was foreign languages and was licensed to teach French, Spanish, Italian and English. She taught for 25 years in various high schools and at one time, also taught at Marymount College in New York City.
Because teaching positions were scarce, immediately after graduation, she worked for several years as a legal secretary on Wall Street. She was eventually able to obtain a position in her chosen field and taught for seven years before her marriage. After raising 3 children, she resumed her career and taught in Dobbs Ferry High School for 18 years, the last two as Chairman of the Foreign Language Department in the Dobbs Ferry School System.
Upon retirement, Milani began teaching religion, another subject she had always been interested in.
Her volunteer work at St. Augustine Church in Ossining included director and coordinator of Religious Education, President of the Legion of Mary, lector, and commentator for mass, planning the candlelight procession and mass for the Our Lady of Fatima feast day as well as the Pro-Life Holy Hour.
Milani was a member of the Italian Apostolate of the Archdiocese of New York and planned the annual Columbus Day Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Milani was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Alfred, in Dec. 2013. Surviving Josephine are her three children, Christine Stigliano, Mark Milani and Mary Milani She had 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Visiting will be Friday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Dorsey Funeral Home. A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Augustine’s Church on Saturday at 9:30 AM. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
