James Flanagan, 85, Former Ossining Resident

OSSINING, N.Y. – Longtime Ossining dentist, Dr. James G. Flanagan, III died at his home in Maine on Friday, July 15. He was 85.

He was born in Manhattan, to James and Helen (Sheehan) Flanagan, Jr. 

He earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Bonaventure University and then went on to serve as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. In 1960, he received his doctorate in dental surgery from Farleigh Dickinson Dental School and pursued his career in his Ossining practice for 30 years.

He married Dolores Perez in 1960, settling in Ossining. They raised four boys, James IV (Jane) of Hopewell Junction, Mark of Seward Arkansa, John (Dawn) of East Granby, Connecticut, and Christopher (Karine) of Mahopac. He also had eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home in Mahopac. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa's Church in Briarcliff Manor. Interment will follow at St. Lawrence O'Toole Cemetery in Brewster.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name are requested to Maine Wilderness Watershed Trust, PO Box 5660, Augusta, ME 04332; or the American Heart Association.
