OSSINING, N.Y. — Gilda Margaret Esperito, a longtime resident of Ossining, died March 5. She was 89.
Born April 1, 1923, in Ossining, Esperito was a daughter of Domenic and Marina D'Emidio Cretara. She was educated in Ossining, graduating from Ossining High School in 1941. On December 16, 1945 she married Anthony J. Esperito.
She was an active member of St. Ann's Church for many years, serving as president and treasurer of the Sodality and the Altar Guild, and worked at the festival. She was a member of many clubs, including the Ossining Golden-Agers Club #1, where she served as vice president and acting president, the Columbiettes Auxiliary #311, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Elks Lodge #1486. She volunteered with many groups as well, including the PTA of St. Ann's and Mary Immaculate Schools, and the Girl Scouts, and worked as a supervisor at the voting polls.
Esperito is survived by three children, Anthony, Donna Lee, and Maureen and her husband Chris DePaoli; two granddaughters; one sister Eva (Pat) Zimbalatti; several nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by five brothers, Charles, William, Mario, Angelo and Dante Cretara; and one sister, Concetta Balassone.
Calling hours are Friday, March 8, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hawthorne Funeral Home, 21 W. Stevens Ave., Hawthorne, N.Y. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, March 9, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann's Church. Interment will follow at St. Augustine Cemetery.
